Film Independent launches “Detail Oriented” with Mitch Paulson Q/A

Film Independent, the organization behind the LA Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards and many other leading indie-related programs, launched its Detail Oriented blog with a fascinating two-part conversation with EFILM’s Mitch Paulson. The piece looks at Paulson’s background, his artistic collaborations with filmmakers and some of his go-to tools. It’s a fascinating read for anyone interested in the work of top-tier colorists.

Joachim Zell Joins Cinematographers to Teach Filmmaking Master Class in Dubai

Joachim Zell, VP of Technology at EFILM, joined a team of high-level filmmaking pros who presented an intensive cinematography and post workshop in Dubai earlier this month. Sponsored by the Dubai International Film Festival, The Dubai Film and TV Commission and industry companies, the five-day event was held at production company Behind the Scenes. It featured directors of photography Theo Van de Sande, ASC (Blade) and Steven Shaw, ASC (Tremors) and Zell, speaking about post. Zell, who also serves as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ ACES Project Vice Chair, also shared information about the progress of the ACES workflow.

Designed to nurture local talent, the workshop gave the working pros hands-on training and practical advice about subjects from lighting for a candle-lit room to best practices for shooting green screen work. Zell focused on the power of color grading to affect images and on methods for cinematographers to maintain visual concepts through to final delivery.

“The men and women in that session were all very knowledgeable,” says Zell. “These are all people who are focused on shooting and operating and, as is often the case, it was an eye opener for many of them to see what can be done at a high-end post facility today.”
